What is Search Engine Optimization?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" or organic" search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results, or the higher it "ranks," the more searchers will visit that site. Different types of search can be targeted in SEO including, image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. Adding SEO to a website involves editing content and HTML coding to both increase the relevance to specific keywords and to remove barriers to the indexing activities of search engines.

"SEO" also refers to "search engine optimizers," a term that describes the consultants who carry out optimization projects on behalf of their clients, as well as employees who perform in-house SEO services. SEO can be offered as a stand-alone service or as part of a larger marketing campaign, however, because effective SEO may require changes to the HTML coding, it is typically incorporated into web site development and design. The term "search engine friendly" may be used to describe web site designs, menus, content management systems and shopping carts that are easy to optimize.
